Florence Lenora “Lenore” Clark (nee Jordan) of Bettendorf, Iowa, passed away on Saturday, the 19th of October, at 102 from age-related illness. She was preceded in death by her parents Floyd Jordan and Ellen Hogan Jordan, husband George Clark, brothers Clair, Kenneth, and James Jordan, sisters Catherine (Sister Mary Esther) Jordan and Dorothy Jordan Gilroy, nephew James “Jim” Gilroy and niece Marjorie “Maggie” Gilroy Farmer Jordan, and nephews William “Bill” and Kevin Jordan. She is survived by her nephew John “Jack” Gilroy, Jr., niece Mary Gilroy, grandnephew Brian Farmer, nephew’s widow Debra Mattson Gilroy, sister-in-law Helen Jordan, nieces Mary Jordan Hawkins and Patricia “Tricia” Jordan Tobolka, nephews Shane and Hogan Jordan, and cousin Marylou Tripolino.
Lenore was born on May 25th, 1922, in a farm house near North English, Iowa. After the departure of her father, her mother moved her and her siblings to Davenport, Iowa, where, with continued support from their mother, they were raised by the Sisters of Humility at St. Vincent’s Orphanage. Enrolling next at the Ottumwa Heights Academy, Lenore received her high school diploma in 1940 and college degree in 1947, the same year she joined the Humility order.
Lenore had a busy career with the order, teaching grade school in five parishes across Iowa. In 1958, she decided to leave the Humilities and found work as a public grade school teacher in Geneva, Illinois. She met her husband-to-be there at a parent/teacher conference, got married, and completed 20 years of teaching in Geneva. Following her husband’s death in 1978, Lenore retired from full-time teaching but conducted private tutoring in her home until 1988, when she moved back to the Quad-Cities.
Lenore served as a substitute teacher in Bettendorf for many years. In early retirement she delivered meals and Communion to the homebound and later volunteered nearly 10,000 hours with Genesis Hospital Auxiliary. She enjoyed visiting family, dining with friends, and taking occasional trips. In her later years, she lived at the Kahl Home nursing facility in Davenport, where she attended Mass daily and was deeply appreciative of those who cared for her. She will long be remembered and missed by her many friends, family and caregivers.
Visitation for Lenore will be held at St. John Vianney Church in Bettendorf on Tuesday, October 29th, at 10:00 AM, followed by funeral services there at 11:00 AM, burial at Mt. Calvary Cemetery, and lunch at the Church Activity Center. Donations can be made in Lenore’s name to St. John Vianney parish or the Congregation of the Humility of Mary.
