Leo E. “Gene” Hoffman, 70, of Donahue, Iowa, died Tuesday, March 15, 2011 at the Clarissa C. Cook Hospice House in Bettendorf.

Visitation will be held from 10:00 A.M. to 12:00 P.M. on Friday, March 18, 2011 at Chambers Funeral Home in Eldridge. Funeral services will be private. Burial with military honors provided by American Legion Post 532 of Donahue will be at the Rock Island National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the family.

Gene was born July 11, 1940 in Davenport, the son of Leo E., Sr. & Gertrude (Baugh) Hoffman. He was united in marriage to Connie Mitchell on August 31, 1963 in Davenport.

He proudly served in the United States Army and was honorably discharged in 1965.

Gene retired as a Millwright from the John Deere Plow & Planter Works after several years. He had more recently been an over-the-road semi driver for 15 years.

Gene enjoyed fishing, mowing his lawn and spending time outdoors. He was very patriotic and loved to fly the American flag on his property.

Those left to honor his memory include his wife, Connie; his daughters, Kim (Doug) Stutt of Eldridge and Kathryn Swisher (Daniel Smithers) of Davenport; his grandchildren, Jason & Matthew Swisher and Jordan & Garrett Stutt; his sisters, Louise DeJuliis of Baltimore, Maryland and Lilah Hurley of Davenport; his brother, Jerry (Emily) Hoffman of Davenport; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Gene was preceded in death by his parents; his granddaughter, Baylee Swisher; and his brother-in-law, John Hurley.

The family would like to express special thanks to the staff of the Clarissa C. Cook Hospice House and Dr. Matthew Neil for all their care and compassion during this time.
