Leon Martin, 91, a resident of Bettendorf, Iowa died on Sunday, December 20, 2009 at the Clarissa Cook Hospice House in Bettendorf.
His funeral service will be held at 11:00 A.M. Monday, December 28, 2009 at the McGinnis-Chambers Funeral Chapel in Bettendorf. Burial will be in Pleasant Valley Cemetery, Pleasant Valley, Iowa. Visitation will be from 9:30 A.M. to 11:00 A.M. Monday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the Clarissa Cook Hospice House.
He was born in Lancaster, Missouri on November 10, 1918, the son of William Everett & Dora A. (Singleton) Martin.
Leon was employed as a dock worker at Oscar Mayer & Company in Davenport retiring after many years of faithful service.
During World War II, he served in the U.S. Army in central Europe and Rhineland. He was honorably discharged as a Sergeant in 1945 and was awarded the World War II Victory Medal, the National Defense Service Medal and the European-African-Middle Eastern Theater Ribbon with 3 Bronze Battle Stars.
Among the things he enjoyed were farming, caring for and riding horses and fishing.
Those left to honor his memory include his daughters, Veronica (Fred) Makepiece of Warner Springs, California, Carol (Charles) Worrell of Kingsville, Missouri, Linda (Tommy) Clark of Phenix City, Alabama and Debbie Paustian of Davenport, Iowa; his sons, Michael Martin of Phenix City, Jeff Martin of Warrensburg, Missouri, Larry (Pam) Martin of Peosta, Iowa, Steven (Joy) Martin of Alabaster, Alabama and Glen Martin of Phenix City; numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren; his sister, Nora Fay (Ray) O’Niell of Delmar, Iowa; and his brothers, James Martin of Milan, Illinois and William Oral Noon of Scott City, Missouri.
Leon was preceded in death by his sister, Dora May Martin; and his brothers, Albert, Estil, Paul, Alvin & Frederick.
