Leonard Dale “Andy” Anderson, 90, a resident of Davenport, Iowa died on Thursday, May 08, 2014 at the home of his son in Port Byron, Illinois.
A service to celebrate his life will be held at 1:30 P.M. on Monday, May 12, 2014 at the McGinnis-Chambers Funeral Home in Bettendorf, Iowa. He will be laid to rest at Pine Hill Cemetery in Davenport where military honors will be conducted. Visitation will be from 11:30 A.M. to 1:30 P.M. Monday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the Make A Wish Foundation.
He was born in Warsaw, Illinois on April 7, 1924, the son of Charles & Stella M. (Gundy) Anderson. Andy was a graduate of Kirksville (MO) High School and also attended the University of Kansas. On April 13, 1947, he was united in marriage to Roberta E. Sportsman in Marceline, Missouri.
During World War II, he served in the U.S. Navy as a Machinist’s Mate 2 nd Class. Upon his honorable discharge in 1946, he was awarded the World War II Victory Medal, the Philippine Liberation Ribbon, the Asiatic Pacific Area Campaign Medal, the American Area Campaign Medal and the Good Conduct Ribbon.
Andy was employed as a tool & die maker, retiring from Gett Industries of Milan, Illinois. In earlier years, he also worked for Swan Engineering of Bettendorf.
Among the things he enjoyed were fishing, bowling, playing horseshoes with his friends, going camping with his family and traveling.
Those left to honor his memory include his beloved wife, Roberta; his sons, Robert Dale (Janice) Anderson of Port Byron, Illinois and Terry Allen (Barb) Anderson of Coal Valley, Illinois; his grandchildren, Brenda Ek, Robert Anderson Jr., Matthew Anderson, Jennifer Gugelmeyer and Brian Overton; and nineteen great-grandchildren.
Andy was preceded in death by his sisters, Cleo Anderson, Dorothy Steele and Estelline Clark; and his brothers, Elbert Anderson and Charles W. Anderson.
