Lester Behrens, 89, of Bettendorf, Iowa, passed away on Saturday, April 30, 2016 at the Clarissa C. Cook Hospice House in Bettendorf.
Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m., Wednesday, May 4, 2016 at McGinnis-Chambers Funeral Home. Visitation will be held from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Walcott Cemetery in Walcott, Iowa. Memorials may be made to the American Legion Post 353 of Dixon, Iowa.
Lester was born December 15, 1926 in Davenport, Iowa, the son of Henry & Margaretha Behrens. He was united in marriage to Dorothy A. Ziegler on May 21, 1949 in Davenport. She preceded him in death on June 17, 2012.
Lester served in the United States Army during WWII. Following his service, he entered into farming. He was a 60-year member of the American Legion Post 353 of Dixon and co-owned Iowa/Illinois Tire Service for 42 years. He had hunted and fished in earlier years and enjoyed gardening and dancing to country music with his companion, Donna.
Those left to honor Lester’s memory include his sons, Bob Behrens and his companion, Sandra Roehlk of Walcott, Bill (Debbie) Behrens of Davenport and Dennis (Kathy) Behrens of Floyd, Iowa; seven grandchildren, Shelley Behrens, Sharon Todd, Timothy Behrens, Samantha Ridenour, Garry Behrens, Matthew Behrens and Stryder Behrens; eleven great- grandchildren, Lauren, Arianna, Andrew, William, Nyle, Nathan, Malesha, Ryan, Christian, Peyton and Elizabeth; one great-great grandson, Marcus; his brothers, Rollo Behrens of Davenport and Wendlyn Behrens of Milan, Illinois; and a special friend, Donna Crowe of Bettendorf.
In addition to his wife, Dorothy, Lester was preceded in death by his parents; his son, Garry; and his brothers and sisters, Leona, Katherine, Erma, Elfreda, Donald, Walter and Norman.
