Lorna May Dawson, 88, a resident of Bettendorf, Iowa died Tuesday, June 7, 2005 at the Iowa Masonic Health Facility, Bettendorf.
Funeral services will be conducted at 1:00 P.M. Friday, June 10, 2005 by the Order of the Eastern Star, Davenport Chapter. Burial will be at the Rock Island National Cemetery. There will be no visitation. Memorials may be made to the Iowa Masonic Health Facility.
She was born November 21, 1916 in Morrison, Illinois, the daughter of Carl & Helen (Krenz) Swanson. On August 7, 1943, she was united in marriage to Carroll E. Dawson in Bennettsville, South Carolina. He preceded her in death on November 15, 1978.
Lorna was an elementary school teacher at Riverdale School (formerly known as Duck Creek School) in Bettendorf and later taught at Jefferson Elementary School in Bettendorf. She taught for over 25 years and later served as a substitute teacher. Lorna began her teaching career as a teacher’s aide while she was still in high school.
She earned her teaching degree from the Iowa State Teacher’s College in Cedar Falls, Iowa and her master’s degree from St. Ambrose University in Davenport, Iowa.
She was a devoted member of the Order of the Eastern Star and a member of the Mohassan Cauldron. In her spare time, she was an avid bowler and enjoyed volunteering at the Iowa Masonic Health Facility.
Those left to honor her memory include her daughter, Gail (Dick Brasch) Dawson of Bettendorf; her sons, Dennis (Linda) Dawson of Wellman, Iowa and Tom Dawson of Springfield, Ohio; her grandchildren, Phillip and Kathy Dawson; her step-grandchildren, Brandy Fulton and T.J. Allen; her sister, Esther Jaeger of Durant, Iowa; and her longtime family friend, Lori Ball of Bettendorf.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her brother, Howard Swanson.
