Lottie H. (McGinnis) Ernst, 90, a resident of Bettendorf, Iowa died on Tuesday, September 20, 2005 at her home following an extended illness.
Her funeral service will be held at 10:30 A.M. Friday, September 23, 2005 at the McGinnis-Chambers Funeral Home in Bettendorf. Burial will be in Davenport Memorial Park. Visitation will be from 4:00 P.M. to 7:00 P.M. Thursday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to Genesis VNA Hospice or a charity of the donor’s choice.
Lottie Helen McGinnis was born in Princeton, Iowa on May 2, 1915 to Rebecca (Porter) and Preston Hailey McGinnis, the youngest of seven children. She attended school in Princeton and in early years, was an elementary school teacher. The McGinnis family founded the McGinnis Funeral Home in Princeton in 1900 and later moved to Bettendorf where they established their funeral home at 644 River Dr. The family later owned & operated the McGinnis Funeral Homes in Davenport, Iowa and in DeWitt, Iowa. Lottie worked at the funeral homes all of her adult life and after many years of dedicated and faithful service, she retired on May 16, 1979.
On October 25, 1941, she was united in marriage to Floyd J. Ernst at the funeral home in Bettendorf. Floyd preceded her in death on January 30, 1990.
Her memberships included Bettendorf Presbyterian Church, the Bettendorf Senior Citizens, Leidertaufel, the Northwest Turners Auxillary, Women of the Moose, the Echo Rebekah Lodge #104, the Birthday Club and the Bettendorf Lionels. Always an avid bowler, she bowled and served as Captain of the McGinnis Funeral Home Bowling Team for 40 years.
Those left to honor her memory include her nieces and their husbands, Beverly & Merritt Sparks of Raleigh, North Carolina, Dorothy (Phillips) Gouge of Spruce Pine, North Carolina, Nancy & Joseph McKinney of Waco, Texas, Deborah Davis of Bradenton, Florida, Jane & Ron Weis of Bettendorf and Ruth McGinnis of Davenport; her nephews, John McGinnis of St. Anne, Illinois and Roy McGinnis of Channahon, Illinois; her sister-in-law, Martha McGinnis of Davenport; a number of great-nieces & great-nephews and several devoted “adopted” nieces & nephews in the Swanson family.
In addition to her husband, Lottie was preceded in death by her sisters, Millie, Ruth and Mary and her brothers, Nelson, Roy and Finley; and her close & special friend, Alta.
