Louis E. Swan, 100, of Willow Spring, North Carolina and formerly of Bettendorf, Iowa, died Tuesday, December 22, 2015 at Johnston Memorial Hospital in Smithfield, North Carolina.
Funeral services will be held at 1:00 P.M, Tuesday, December 29, 2015 at McGinnis-Chambers Funeral Home in Bettendorf. Visitation will be held from 12:00 noon until the time of the services on Tuesday at the funeral home. Burial with military honors will be held at Rock Island National Cemetery. Memorials may be made to Wounded Warriors or the American Diabetes Association.
Louis was born October 22, 1915 in Stoughton, Massachusetts, the son of William & Stella (Nedzwedski) Swan. He served in the Army Air Corps during WWII, having participated in Europe, including Ardennes, Rhineland and Normandy. Upon his honorable discharge, he had earned six battle stars. He was a graduate of Boston College.
Louis was united in marriage to Vivian Manthorne in Boston, Massachusetts on June 3, 1950. She preceded him in death on September 8, 1989.
He was employed as a supply analyst at the Rock Island Arsenal, retiring in 1977.
Those left to honor his memory include his daughters, Nancy Taylor of Columbia, Missouri and Jenny Knoche of Calamus, Iowa; his sons, Daniel Swan of Willow Spring, North Carolina and David Swan of Brooklyn Park, Minnesota; fourteen grandchildren; and ten great-grandchildren.
In addition to his wife, Vivian, Louis was preceded in death by his parents; his daughter, Martha Swan; and his sister, Agnes O’Brien.
