Lowell J. Ahlers, 89, a resident of Bettendorf, Iowa and formerly of LeClaire, Iowa, died Thursday, March 9, 2006 at Genesis Medical Center-West Campus, Davenport.
His funeral service will be held at 1:00 P.M., Monday, March 13, 2006 at the McGinnis-Chambers Funeral Chapel, Bettendorf. Burial with military honors will be held at the Rock Island National Cemetery, Rock Island, Illinois. Visitation will be from 2:00 P.M. to 5:00 P.M. Sunday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the family.
Lowell was born September 14, 1916 in Grand Mound, Iowa, the son of Albert & Lottie (Olson) Ahlers. He was united in marriage to Ella L. Fock on August 15, 1941 in Davenport.
He was employed by the Alcoa Company for 20 years, retiring in 1981. In earlier years, he worked for 14 years at the J. I. Case Company in Bettendorf.
During World War II, Lowell served in the U.S. Army. He participated in the Battle of the Bulge, served in Normandy, Northern France, Ardennes, Rhineland and Central Europe. He was honorably discharged in 1945 and was awarded the Distinguished Unit Badge, the Good Conduct Medal, the American Defense Service Ribbon, the European African Middle-Eastern Theater Ribbon with 1 Silver Battle Star and 3 Overseas Service Bars.
His memberships included the American Legion Post # 347 of LeClaire, the Quad-City Times Plus 60 Club, the Union Hall Retirees Club and the Alcoa Retirees Club.
Lowell enjoyed fishing, hunting, playing cards, and dancing. In earlier years, he and Ella would spend time in Florida over the winter months.
Those left to honor his memory include his wife, Ella; his daughter and son-in-law, Sandy & Jim Cale, of Blue Grass, Iowa; his sons and daughters-in-law, Lowell & Barb Ahlers, of Bettendorf and Jack & Judith Ahlers, of LeClaire; eight grandchildren; seventeen great-grandchildren; his brother and sister-in-law, Donald & Lois Ahlers, of Calumus, Iowa; his sisters, Shirley Burmeister, and her husband, George, of Davenport, and Phyllis Eaton, of Grand Mound, Iowa.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his son, Ricky; and four great-grandchildren.
