Lu Vern W. “Tony” Klinkenberg, 89, a resident of Bettendorf, Iowa died on Thursday, January 15, 2009 at Manor Care Nursing Center in Davenport, Iowa.
A service to celebrate his life will be held at 11:00 A.M. on Monday, January 19, 2009 at St. James Lutheran Church of Bettendorf. The family will greet friends from 10:00 A.M. to 11:00 A.M. Monday at the church. Contributions in his memory may be made to the church. McGinnis-Chambers Funeral Home of Bettendorf is assisting the family with arrangements.
He was born in St. Olaf, Iowa on May 21, 1919, the son of Marvin J. & Elsie (Possehl) Klinkenberg and was a graduate of Farmersburg High School. He also attended Elkader Junior College in Elkader, Iowa. On November 28, 1940, he was united in marriage to Jane A. Mohrman in St. Olaf.
During World War II, he served in the U.S. Army with the 3rd Division in Central Europe. Upon his honorable discharge at a Master Sergeant in 1946, he receive the Good Conduct Medal and the European-African-Middle Eastern Theater Service Medal.
He was employed as a Driver’s Examiner with the State of Iowa. In earlier years, he worked for Farley & Loetscher Manufacturing in Dubuque, Iowa as Shipping
Supervisor. He also was employed by Meadow Transfer and Jenkins & Dohrn.
Tony & Jane loved to dance and he was an avid sports fan, especially of the St. Louis Cardinals. In addition, he enjoyed gardening, traveling and playing cards with his family and friends.
His memberships included St. James Lutheran Church and the Royal Neighbors of America.
Those left to honor his memory include his beloved wife of 68 years, Jane; his children, Barbara Ann (Lyle) Miller of Davenport, Bonnie Lea (Bud) Fox of Bettendorf and William “Bill” Klinkenberg of Davenport & his fiancé, Jean Powers; six grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
