Marcelino P. “Marshall” Herrara, 85, a resident of Bettendorf, Iowa passed away at his home on Monday, November 26, 2007.
Funeral services and Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:30 A.M., Thursday, November 29, 2007 at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church, Bettendorf. Burial with military honors provided by the Mexican-American Veterans Association, Post 8890, will be at the Rock Island National Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 4:00 P.M. to 7:00 P.M. Wednesday at the McGinnis-Chambers Funeral Home, Bettendorf where a Christian Wake Service will be held at 6:00 P.M. Memorials may be made to the church or the American Cancer Society.
He was born April 28, 1922 in Davenport, Iowa, the son of Primitivo & Basilisa (Torres) Herrera. In June of 1942, he was united in marriage to Lupe C. Castro in Bettendorf. She preceded him in death on January 30, 2003.
Marshall proudly served in the United States Army in the 3rd Infantry Division during World War II, serving as a Combat Engineer in North Africa, Italy, Germany and France. He fought in the Battle of Anzio before receiving his honorable discharge in 1945. He was awarded the European-African-Middle Eastern Theater Ribbon with one Silver Battle Star, the Bronze Service Arrowhead, and four Overseas Service Bars.
Marshall retired on July 1, 1983 after several years of employment as a heating plant supervisor at the Rock Island Arsenal. He also served as President of Local 1200 International Brotherhood of Firemen and Oilers. He loved to tell stories for his grandchildren and enjoyed spending time with and having dinner with his beloved family.
Those left to honor his memory include his daughter, Celia (Scott) Luke of Bettendorf; his sons, Charles (Terry) Herrera, of Bettendorf, Paul (Sue) Herrera, of Milan, Illinois, and Mark Herrera of Bettendorf; ten grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and his sisters, Angela (Raphael) Arguello, of Davenport, and Annie Ramirez, of Davenport.
In addition to his wife, Lupe; he was preceded in death by his parents; his sister, Aurora Hernandez; and his brother, John Herrera.
