Marilyn J. McCammant, 77, a resident of Eldridge, died Wednesday, July 20, 2016 at the Iowa Masonic Health Facility in Bettendorf. She waged a 15 year battle with Alzheimer’s.
Funeral services celebrating her life will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, July 23, 2016 at Faith Lutheran Church in Eldridge. Burial will be at the Dixon Cemetery in Dixon. Visitation will be from 4:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m. on Friday, July 22nd at the church. Memorials may be made to Faith Lutheran Church or the Shriners Hospitals for Children. Chambers Funeral Home in Eldridge is assisting the family with arrangements.
Born on June 27, 1939 in Davenport, Marilyn was the daughter of Henry and Eleanor (Lembke) Siemsen. On July 23, 1961 at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Davenport, she married John McCammant.
Marilyn was a 1957 graduate of Wheatland High School where she played centerfield and was co-captain for the softball team, wining the state championship in 1956 and hitting a home run during the championship game. Marilyn worked for American Airlines, Ozark Airlines and Western Airlines as a reservationist and flight attendant. She retired as a city mail carrier in Eldridge, using only one sick day during 28 years of service. She enjoyed riding her bicycle and was an avid gardener. Marilyn was a member of Faith Lutheran Church in Eldridge where she sang in the church choir for many years; served on the church council and was a youth leader. Marilyn was very active in her community, serving as president of the Eldridge Park Board, a Cub Scout den mother and a polling attendant for elections. One of her greatest community accomplishments was founding and chairing the Trees Forever program for Eldridge, planting a total of 532 trees during her 15 years of involvement. Marilyn was also active in the Shriners, supporting John and was often responsible for developing Shrine activities for the ladies.
Those left to honor her memory include her husband, John; sons and their wives, David and Desiree McCammant and Chris and Vicky McCammant, both of Eldridge; grandchildren, Grace, Alexander and Sam; sisters, Donna Jensen of Lowden and Karen (Bob) Lumsden of Columbus, Ohio; brothers, Rich (Joan) Siemsen of Dixon and Randy (Pat) Siemsen of Davenport; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; brother-in-law, Jerold Jensen; and a nephew, Jeff Jensen.
