Marilynn E. (Wick) Smith Gibson, 87, of Bettendorf, Iowa, died Tuesday, August 4, 2015 at her home.
Funeral services will be held Friday, August 14, 2015 at 10:00 a.m. at Asbury United Methodist Church in Bettendorf. To honor Marilynn’s memory and her love of hats, all ladies are encouraged to wear a favorite hat. Visitation will be Thursday, August 13, 2015 from 4:00-7:00 p.m. at McGinnis-Chambers Funeral Home in Bettendorf and on Friday an hour before the services at the church. Burial will be in Forest Home Cemetery in Mt. Pleasant, Iowa. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Asbury United Methodist Church.
Mrs. Gibson was born in Mt. Pleasant, Iowa in 1927, the daughter of Roy Hoppe Wick and Lillian Hookom Wick. She spent her childhood on the Steamboat Farm in Caanan Township, attending country school and Mt. Union Consolidated School, graduating in 1945. She earned an elementary teacher certificate from Iowa Weslyan College in 1947. She began her teaching career in Clarence, Iowa in 1947, taught in several Iowa communities and later was an associate teacher in the Bettendorf Public Schools. She also worked at the former Bettendorf Bank and Trust and First Trust and Savings in Davenport, retiring in 1979.
She married Barton W. Smith in 1948 in Winfield, Iowa, and Sidney L. Gibson in 1980 in Bettendorf. Both preceded her in death.
Mrs. Gibson was a member of Beta Chapter of the Alpha Xi Delta sorority, Questers International, Red Hat Society, the National Active and Retired Federal Employees Association, and Asbury United Methodist Church. Her hobbies and interests included collecting antiques, travel, reading and spoiling her grandchildren.
She is survived by her brothers, James Wick of Sun City West, Arizona and Richard Wick of Mt. Pleasant; her sons and daughters-in-law, Charles and Kyle Smith of Orlando, Florida, Warren and Terri Smith of Denver, Colorado and Robert and Judy Smith of Crown Point, Indiana; and her grandsons Cameron C. Smith of Golden, Colorado, William W. Smith of Sanford, Florida and Alex B. Smith of Daytona Beach, Florida.
