Marion J. West, 85, a resident of LeClaire, Iowa and formerly of Princeton, Iowa died on Saturday, July 15, 2006 at Riverview Manor Nursing Home, Pleasant Valley, Iowa.
His funeral service will be held at 10:30 A.M. Thursday, July 20, 2006 at Zion Lutheran Church, Princeton. Burial will be in Glendale Cemetery, LeClaire, Iowa where military honors will be conducted by the American Legion Post #343. Visitation will be from 3:00 P.M. to 7:00 P.M. Wednesday at the McGinnis-Chambers Funeral Home, Bettendorf, Iowa where a masonic service will be conducted at 7:00 P.M. Memorials may be made to the Shriner’s Hospitals for Children, Snow Lodge #44 of LeClaire or to Zion Lutheran Church, Princeton.
He was born May 6, 1921 in Davenport, Iowa. On September 24, 1947, he was united in marriage to Rozella V. Dodds in Davenport. She preceded him in death on October 8, 1996.
Marion was employed as a mechanic for Priester Construction for 15 years. In addition, he was employed as a mechanic for Lund Implement Company in Princeton for 24 years.
During World War II, he served as a Combat Engineer in the U.S. Army serving in India. Marion was a member & past-commander of the China-Burma-India Veterans Association.
He was a member & past-master of Snow Lodge #44, A.F. & A.M. of LeClaire, a member & past-patron of the former Silver Creek Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star of LeClaire, the Davenport Consistory, Kaaba Shrine, the Buffalo Bill Shrine Club and the American Legion Post 347. He was also a longtime and faithful member of Zion Lutheran Church of Princeton. Marion served on the Princeton Volunteer Fire Department for over 50 years.
In 1972, he was recognized with a commendation from the Rock Island Arsenal for saving a man’s life after an accident.
Those left to honor his memory include his son, Dennis (Rose) West of Davenport; his grandson, Jun; his great-grandchildren, Mychala, Jenelle & Jeffrey; his sister, Mabel Loy of Ottumwa, Iowa; his nephews, Lynn Loy of Chicago, Illinois, Steve Loy in Kentucky and Tom West of Orchard City, Washington; his nieces, Joyce Lund Mears of LeClaire and Nina West of Orchard City; and his brother & sister-in-law, Melvin & Kathy Dodds of LeClaire.
In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his sister, Ellen; and his brothers, John & Malcolm.
