Marjorie Collier
August 22, 1920 — December 9, 2017
Our mother, Marjorie H. Collier, 97, and another of the greatest generation, left us Saturday, December 9, 2017 to join our father.
She was born August 22, 1920 in Hills, Iowa, the oldest of five born to Aaron and Nellie (Stimmel) Lake.
In Santa Rosa, California, on September 27, 1943, Mother married Albert L. Collier, a handsome Navy Seebee just returned from Guadcanal, in the Solomons. He preceded her in death in 1994 after 51 years of marriage.
Marjorie retired from Bausch and Lomb Optical Company in 1980 after twenty-four years of service starting as a courier and going out as office manager.
As per Mother’s wishes, cremation has been accorded and there will be no services. Burial will be at Davenport Memorial Park and a private family gathering will be held at a later date. Memorials may be made to the family. McGinnis-Chambers Funeral Home of Bettendorf is assisting the family with arrangements.
She was preceded in death by her beloved sailor, Albert; her parents; her brother, Aaron Lake of Davenport; and her sisters, Beverly Carlson, China Lake, California, Betty Kuehl-Chester, Buffalo, Iowa; and her best friend through thick and thin, her sister, Dorothy Hanson, Viola, Illinois.
Left to honor her memory are her and Albert’s three children, Jean (James) Ryan, Davenport and their children. Tamara (Mark) Wagoner, Davenport and James (Cindy) Ryan, Maquoketa; her daughter, Barbara (Richard) Bryant, Coal Valley and their daughter, Sonjia (Scott) Spring and their daughter, Antonia, Makawao, Maui, Hawaii; and her son, Steven C. Collier of Davenport. She was very proud of her three grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren. Family was everything.
Mother’s passion was quilt-making and for many years she made these treasures for family until macular degeneration took that wonderful pastime away.
She leaves behind dozens of nieces and nephews. Thank you to Carol and Kenny Bernauer of Buffalo, Iowa and Janis Koehn of Viola, Illinois for your many visits of love and caring. She loved you all.
And now our family has no more old ones to listen to and learn from. The loss of Mother’s generation diminishes us all.
