Marjorie Venhorst

July 4, 1918 — September 9, 2014

Marjorie Ann VenHorst, 96, a resident of Ridgecrest Village, formerly of Bettendorf, IA, died Tuesday, September 9, 2014 surrounded by her family.

Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m., Saturday, September 13, 2014 at McGinnis-Chambers Funeral Home in Bettendorf.  Burial will be at Davenport Memorial Park. Visitation will be held from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Friday at the funeral home.  Memorials may be made to Our Savior Presbyterian Church in Argo, Iowa.

Marjorie was born July 4, 1918 in Stephen, MN, the daughter of Henry and Mabel (Hess) Hamann.  She was united in marriage to Ernest L. Mess on February 22, 1939.  He preceded her in death on July 14, 1963.  She was later united in marriage to John H. VenHorst on August 19, 1967. He preceded her in death on January 2, 2012

Throughout most of her life, Marjorie was a homemaker and worked on the family farm. She was a member of Our Savior Presbyterian Church in Argo and a previous member of Summit Presbyterian Church where she was the first lady elder. Marjorie will be remembered for her love of cooking and sewing of quilts for other people. Marjorie cherished her time spent with family, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Those left to honor her memory include her son, Elmer (Maria) Mess of Davenport; her daughters, Joanne (Lester) Oberbreckling of Eldridge and Jane (Gary) Weber of Bettendorf; her step-daughters, Helen Peters of Eldridge and Dorothy (Bill) Kennedy of Davenport; 11 grandchildren, 8 step-grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren, 10 step great-grandchildren and 2 great-great grandchildren; her sisters, Helen Sutton of Princeton, IL and Bernice Schebler of Davenport.

She was preceded in death by her parents; both husbands; daughter, Jeanne Krambeck; daughter-in-law, Sonja Mess; son-in-law, Vernon Fahrenkrog; granddaughter, Linda Fahrenkrog; great-granddaughter, Madelyn Mess; grandson-in-law, Andrew Gevers; step son-in-law, John Peters; and many brother and sisters-in-law, nieces, nephews and cousins.
