Marjorie L. Hempel, 86, of Bettendorf, died Thursday, March 17, 2005 at Genesis Medical Center-West Campus, Davenport. Graveside services will be 11:00 A.M., Saturday, March 19, 2005 at Davenport Memorial Park. Memorials may be made to a charity of the donor’s choice. McGinnis-Chambers Funeral Home, Bettendorf is assisting the family with arrangements.
Marjorie was born September 1, 1918 in Hoopeston, Illinois, the daughter of Harry & Zelda (Forshier) Gustine. Her family moved to Chicago so she could attend the Parker Oral School for the Deaf. There she met and later married Herman F. Hempel, Jr. on May 9, 1942. He preceded her in death on June 18, 1968. They moved to Bettendorf in 1948. Marjorie had been employed as a seamstress at the William Bradford Company, for 19 years and at the Davenshire Company for 5 years, both formerly located in Davenport. She retired in 1981.
Those left to honor her memory include her sons and daughters-in-law, William G. and Joy Hempel, Bettendorf and Tom F. and Marti Hempel, Davenport; seven grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents and her brother, Frank W. Gustine, a former baseball player for the Pittsburgh Pirates and the Chicago Cubs. He was an All-Star third baseman in 1946-48. He died in Davenport on April 1, 1991 while visiting his sister.
