Mark Earl Schaefer, 51, a resident of Marco Island, Florida formerly of Bettendorf, Iowa died on Sunday, October 10, 2010 at his home of an apparent heart attack.
A service to celebrate his life will be held at 10:30 A.M. Monday, November 8, 2010 at the McGinnis-Chambers Funeral Chapel in Bettendorf. Burial will be at Mt. Calvary Cemetery, Davenport, Iowa. The family will greet friends from 2:00 P.M. to 4:00 P.M. on Sunday at the funeral home and one hour prior to services on Monday. Contributions in his memory may be made to Camp Courageous of Monticello, Iowa, the Shriner’s Hospitals for Children of Chicago, Illinois or the American Heart Association.
He was born May 20, 1959 in Davenport, the son of Earl & Ruth (Pokorny) Schaefer. Mark grew up in Bettendorf and graduated from Pleasant Valley High School in 1977. He lived on Marco Island for over 20 years where he worked as a bartender the the Marriott Hotel. In earlier years, he was employed at Therma-Cold/Birdseye of Bettendorf.
Mark, being a bachelor, enjoyed spending time with his nieces & nephews, family & friends, sharing his sense of humor, (but not his winnings on scratch-offs or PowerBall) and playing cards. He collected John Deere memorabilia and was fond of Jim’s Ribs and Happy Joes Taco Pizza. He also received many Gold Keys from the Marriott for outstanding services. Mark will be great missed by those who knew & loved him.
Those left to honor his memory include his mother, Ruth Schaefer of Bettendorf; his sisters, Judy (John) Fitzgibbon of LeClaire, Iowa and Karen (Tim) MacDade of Marco Island; his brother, Mike (Kim) Schaefer of Bettendorf; his nieces & nephews, Sarah Sexton, Shelley Johnson, Amy Fitzgibbon, Allison Schaefer, Marianne McGee, Scott Mulvania, Ryan MacDade, Alex Schaefer and John Fitzgibbon III; four great-nieces and great-nephews; and many friends, especially Betty, Mary, Tom, Cam & John.
He was preceded in death by his father, Earl Schaefer; and all of his grandparents.
Mark, we will miss you greatly, rest in peace.
