Martha Denkmann Zuhn, 91, of Bettendorf, Iowa died Saturday, July 17, 2010, at the Bettendorf Healthcare Center, Bettendorf. Memorial services will be held at 2:00 P.M. on Thursday, July 22, 2010, at the McGinnis-Chambers Funeral Chapel, Bettendorf, Iowa, the Rev. Scott Minteer, First Presbyterian Church, Davenport, Iowa officiating. Burial will be in Walcott Cemetery, Walcott, Iowa. McGinnis-Chambers Funeral Home, Bettendorf, is handling arrangements.
Martha was born January 27, 1919, in Round Lake, Minn., to Ben and Martha Denkmann. She spent her early youth in Durant, Iowa, then attended and graduated from Brown Business College. She was employed by the Bettendorf Company and the Bettendorf Chamber of Commerce, and she retired in 1972.
Martha married Herman P. Zuhn in 1943, and they resided in Bettendorf.
She participated in several local organizations: Pyramid Temple No. 10, Daughter of the Nile; Bettendorf Lionels; Women’s Division, Bettendorf Chamber of Commerce; Women of the Moose; WIBC—Women’s Bowling Association; Putnam Museum Guild, and National TTT Society—Iowa DZ Chapter. In 1988 she reached 50-year membership in the First Presbyterian Church of Davenport.
Martha enjoyed playing bridge, traveling, collecting clown dolls, and she belonged to a 500 card club for over fifty years.
She adopted a green space at the intersection of Grant and State Streets in Bettendorf, which she landscaped and maintained. The City of Bettendorf formally named it Martha’s Point.
Martha was preceded in death by her husband; her parents, and three sisters—Mrs. Dorothy Ingersoll, Mrs. Gertrude Tagge, and Sister Verona Denkmann. Survivors are two nieces—Mrs. Suzanne Huebsch of Cedar Rapids and Mrs. Jane Kyle of Jacksonville, Fla.,
and several grandnephews and grandnieces.
Memorials may be given to First Presbyterian Church, Davenport.
