Martha Louise McGinnis, 97, a resident of Davenport, Iowa died on Sunday, August 5, 2007 at The Postillion in Davenport.
Her funeral service will be held at 10:00 A.M. Thursday, August 9, 2007 at the McGinnis-Chambers Funeral Chapel in Bettendorf, Iowa. Burial will be in Glendale Cemetery, LeClaire, Iowa. Visitation will be from 4:00 P.M. to 7:00 P.M. Wednesday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to St. John United Methodist Church of Davenport or to the Pilot International Foundation.
She was born in Tipton, Iowa on March 17, 1910, the daughter of Henry & Agnes (Gundelach) Schroeder. In 1942, she was united in marriage to Roy B. McGinnis in Oceola, Nebraska. He preceded her in death in 1973.
In 1975, Martha retired from the former William Bradford Clothing Company in Davenport where she worked for many years. In earlier years, she & her husband owned & operated Babyland, a child’s furniture and clothing store in Davenport. Martha had the distinction of being the first crossing guard at the corner of Brady & Locust in Davenport, helping little ones cross the street to Madison School.
Her memberships included St. Johns United Methodist Church and an honorary membership in Pilot International. She was a former member and president of the PTA, a former Cub Scout Den Mother and a Camfire Girl Leader where she also served on the board.
Martha enjoyed caring for her beautiful flowers and was accomplished in crocheting and knitting.
Those left to honor her memory include her daughter, Ruth McGinnis of Davenport; her son & daughter-in-law, Roy & Janet McGinnis of Channahon, Illinois; her grandchildren, Leslie McGinnis & her fiancé, Ben Finch and Darci McGinnis; her great-grandchildren, Chaz McGinnis and Landon McGinnis; and Annie & Steve Knittel of Atlanta, Georgia who thought of Martha as their very special mom.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her sisters, Nora and Dolores and her brother, Fritz.
