Marvin E. Hinkle, 83, a resident of Eldridge, Iowa died on Sunday, September 26, 2010 at his home.
His funeral service will be held at 10:00 A.M. Thursday, September 30, 2010 at the Park View Lutheran Church, Park View, Iowa. Burial with military honors will be at Elmwood Cemetery, DeWitt, Iowa. Visitation will be from 4:00 P.M. to 7:00 P.M. Wednesday at the Chambers Funeral Home, Eldridge, Iowa. Memorials may be made to Park View Lutheran Church or the American Legion Post #639 of Eldridge.
He was born February 13, 1927 in Oskaloosa, Iowa, the son of Roy & Velda (Crayne) Hinkle. On September 11, 1949, he was united in marriage to Frances M. Gravert in DeWitt. She preceded him in death on June 17, 2008.
Marvin owned & operated Hinkle Surveying of Eldridge for many years. He surveyed the original plat for Park View, surveyed sections of Eldridge & DeWitt, many other areas in Scott and Clinton Counties and in Illinois as well.
During World War II, he served in the U.S. Army with the 51 st Infantry Battalion and was honorably discharged in 1947 as a Tech Sergeant at which time he was awarded the European-African-Middle Eastern Theater Ribbon and the World War II Victory Medal. In 1950, he was recalled to active duty when the Korean Conflict began. He was honorably discharged for a second time as a Master Sergeant in 1951 at which time he was awarded the Korean Service Medal and two Bronze Service Stars.
His memberships included Park View Lutheran Church, the Eldridge Lions Club, the American Legion Post #639 of Eldridge and the Iowa Society of Land Surveyors where he formerly served as President.
Among the things Marvin enjoyed were fishing, watching (and playing) football and softball, traveling with his beloved wife Frances, solving jigsaw puzzles and caring for his garden.
Those left to honor his memory include his daughters, Pat (Ted) Claeys of DeWitt and Deb (John) Smith of Donahue, Iowa; his son, Doug (Karma) Hinkle of DeWitt; five grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren.
In addition to his wife, Marvin was preceded in death by his daughter, Pamela Jo Hinkle in 1973,
