Marvin D. Harris, 87, a resident of Corning, Iowa and formerly of Davenport, Iowa died on Monday, February 23, 2009 at the University of Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha, Nebraska.
His funeral service will be held at 1:00 P.M. Monday, March 2, 2009 at the McGinnis-Chambers Funeral Chapel in Bettendorf, Iowa. Burial with military honors will be held at the Rock Island National Cemetery. Visitation will be from 11:30 A.M. to 1:00 P.M. Monday at the funeral home.
Marvin Donald Harris was born December 28, 1921 in Grant, Iowa, the son of Albert Charles & Maude LaVerna (Williams) Harris. He grew up in the Grant area of Montgomery County where he attended school. He entered the U.S. Air Force on December 10, 1942 faithfully serving his country for two years, eleven months & twenty-four days, being honorably discharged on December 4, 1945.
Marvin moved back to the Quad-Cities area where he worked for International Harvester for fourteen years. He returned to the Morton Mills, Iowa area to help his parents and while there, worked as a supervisor for the Pinkerton Securities Company. After his retirement in the mid 1980’s, Marvin moved to Corning.
He was a very talented man with the ability to play a number of musical instruments. However, it was the piano he was most passionate about and was known as “Mr. Piano Man,” having played the piano for over 70 years. Later in his life he enjoyed playing for people at the meal site and the nursing home. He was always willing to help others and enjoyed being around people, often telling one of his many stories.
Those left to honor his memory include his son, Larry (Judy) Harris of Davenport; four grandchildren; numerous great-grandchildren; his sister, Florence Templeman of Atlantic, Iowa; his brother, Don W. (Mary) Harris of Rock Island, Illinois; and many other relatives and friends.
Preceding Marvin in death were his parents, Albert & Maude Harris; six sisters, Beulah, Belva, Salma, Alma, Vernita & Darlene; and four brothers, Orne, Edwin, Ellsworth, Raymond and Ivan who died in infancy.
