Marvin L. Carlson, 71, of Long Grove, Iowa, passed away suddenly on Monday, February 4, 2008, at Genesis Medical Center, East Campus, Davenport, Iowa.
The family will greet friends and relatives from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, February 9th at Chambers Funeral Home, Eldridge. A private memorial service to celebrate his life will be held at 1:30 p.m. Memorials may be made to St. Paul Lutheran Church of Davenport, or the University of Iowa Hospitals & Clinics, Iowa City, Iowa.
Marvin was born November 19, 1936 in Anita, Iowa, the son of Lawrence and Leona (Witte) Carlson. He was united in marriage to Betty L. Hoffmann Andersen on July 28, 1978 in Davenport.
A graduate of Anita High School, Marvin was employed for over 30 years at the Eldridge Co-Op, now River Valley Cooperative. Marvin worked with dedication and commitment to better serve the farmers he considered friends. He continued to be a seasonal employee for 10 years after his retirement in 1997.
In January 2008, Marvin rejoiced in the 50 year milestone of his successful open heart surgery performed at University of Iowa Hospitals. He was an avid Iowa Hawkeye football fan and "I" Club Member who attended games for over 40 years. Marv loved the game of golf and instilled that passion in his son, Travis, from the age of three. Trips to visit family in Texas, going fishing in Texas, golfing in Bella Vista, Arkansas, trips to Disney World and Hawkeye Bowl games were his joy.
Marvin exemplified selfless, steadfast devotion to family throughout his life. Those left to honor his memory include his beloved wife, Betty; Nancy (Rick) Talley, of Hitchcock, TX, Jeff Carlson, Eldridge, Greg Carlson, Davenport, Tracy Williams, Eldridge, Kurt (Katherine) Andersen, Eldridge, and Travis (Katie) Carlson of Des Moines; many beautiful grandchildren and great-grandchildren; his sister and brother, Phyllis Aupperle and Bud Carlson of Western Iowa and another sister, Donna Carlson of Pennsylvania.
Marvin was preceded in death by his parents; his sister, Gladys; his brother, Gaile, his sister-in-law Gloria and a grandson, Mathew.
