Mary A. Hacker, 89, a resident of Bettendorf, Iowa, was taken by the good Lord to be with Him on Friday, December 3, 2010 at the Iowa Masonic Health Facility in Bettendorf.

Visitation will be held from 4:00 P.M. to 7:00 P.M., Monday, December 6, 2010 at McGinnis-Chambers Funeral Home in Bettendorf. A Christian Wake Service will be held at 4:00 P.M. Burial will be private at Davenport Memorial Park. Memorials may be made to Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church or to the Alzheimer’s Association.

Mary was born to Jon & Anna (Sherbring) Glass in Odebolt, Iowa on February 5, 1921. She attended school in Humboldt, Iowa. After graduating from high school, she entered nursing school at St. Anthony Hospital in Carroll, Iowa. In 1942 she graduated from nursing school and worked as a private duty nurse.

She met the love of her life in 1944 and she traveled to Melbourne, Florida to marry Maurice F. Hacker on October 14, 1944 where he was stationed in the United States Navy.

They came back to Carroll to work and raise a family. In 1951, the family moved to Bettendorf and have lived there ever since. Mary and Maurice were married fifty-nine years until his death on March 10, 2004.

Mary worked for the former Mercy Hospital in Davenport, which is now Genesis Medical Center, West Campus. She also worked at the Iowa Masonic Home as Head Nurse for several years. Additionally, she was employed with the Good Samaritan Center and Ridgecrest Village of Davenport. She retired after forty years of nursing.

She then went to work with the City of Bettendorf as a crossing guard at Central and 23 rd streets for seven years.

She is survived by her daughter, Patricia Hacker, of Bettendorf; her sisters-in-law, Anna Mae Hacker and Lee David, both of Carroll, Virginia Janning, of Storm Lake, Iowa, Marie Glass, of Carroll; her brother-in-law, Robert McDonald of Carroll; and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to her husband, Maurice, Mary was preceded in death by her parents; and two brothers.

The family would like to express special thanks to the doctors, nurses and staff of the Iowa Masonic Health Facility and Genesis Hospice.
