Mary Caroline Phillips, 95, of The Fountains in Bettendorf, formerly of LeClaire, Iowa, died Monday, November 27, 2017 at Clarissa C. Cook Hospice House in Bettendorf.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 A.M. on Friday, December 1, 2017 at McGinnis-Chambers Funeral Home in Bettendorf. Burial will be at Glendale Cemetery in LeClaire. Visitation will be held from 10:00 A.M. until the time of services. Memorials may be made to the LeClaire Fire Department.
Mary was born May 19, 1922 in Macomb, Illinois the daughter of Lester and Loutice (Massey) Ballard. She graduated from LeClaire High School in 1942. She was united in marriage to Harvey G. Phillips on June 14, 1942. He preceded her in death on November 19, 2003.
Mary was a homemaker but had worked at the LeClaire Schools, Rock Island Arsenal, and Woolworths. Mary enjoyed making hats for women; was involved with the Riveresta Parade in LeClaire; was active in many women’s club and card clubs. Mary played a vital role in assisting her husband with the fire department while Harvey was fire chief.
Those left to honor her memory include her daughter and son-in-law, Sandra and Gary Steinke of Bettendorf; her son and daughter-in-law, Donald and Linda Phillips of Bettendorf; her grandchildren and their spouses, Kimberly and Jim LaMarre of Pflugerville, Texas, Whitney and Chad Gingrich of Tremont, Illinois, Matthew Steinke of London, England and David and Jennifer Steinke of Des Moines; her great-grandchildren, Abigail, Garrett and Tyler LaMarre, Peyton and Eli Willett, Garett and Harley Gingrich, Marcus, AmesLee, and Lucas Steinke; her sisters, Betty Marley of Geneseo, and Adda Little of Bettendorf.
She was preceded in death by her husband; her parents, brother, Les; and sisters, Katherine, Darlene, Mildred, and Alta.
