Mary Smith

Mary “Penny” Smith, 83, of Bettendorf, passed away peacefully Thursday, February 12, 2015, at Rosewood Care Center, Moline.

A memorial service to celebrate Mary’s life will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, March 3, 2015 at St. John Vianney Catholic Church in Bettendorf.  Burial will be at Rock Island National Cemetery. Visitation will be one hour prior to mass on Tuesday. Memorials can be made to the family. McGinnis-Chambers Funeral Home in Bettendorf is assisting the family with arrangements.

Mary was born September 7 ^th , 1931 in El Monte, California to Silvio “Sam” Moranda and Ellen (Dobbs) Moranda. Mary was united in marriage to her husband of 49 years, 1 ^st SGT John T Smith, on December 24 ^th 1963 in Gonzales, California. Mary had been employed at Chrysler Motor Company, as a registered nurse and later in life at Hurst Chiropractic Clinic.

During Mary’s years as a military wife she enjoyed traveling the world with the love of her life, John.  Mary was a devout Catholic and later in life Mary became involved in church activities at Saint John Vianney Catholic Church and volunteered many of her spare hours to assisting the church with many activities and functions.  Mary also enjoyed knitting and playing bingo.  Mary thoroughly enjoyed visiting with friends and family and was always known as a person that could brighten the room with her smile and witty conversation.  Mary touched the lives and hearts of so many people throughout the years and will be missed by all.

Survivors include her son, Jeff Smith, Bettendorf and daughter Peggy McNatt, Melbourne, Florida.

Mary was preceded in death by her parents Sam and Ellen; Brother Bobby and her husband John.
