Mary M. Stewart, 105, a resident of Bettendorf, Iowa died Saturday, December 20, 2003 at Manor Care Nursing Center in Davenport.
Family graveside services will be held in Monroe, Iowa. Memorials may be made to the East Moline Public Library. McGinnis-Chambers Funeral Home, Bettendorf is assisting the family with arrangements.
Mary was born on November 8, 1898 in Dallas County, Iowa, the daughter of Frank & Anna (Boehler) Wohlwend. She married Clarence Wood in 1917. He preceded her in death in 1938. She later married Leonard “Red” Stewart in 1939. He preceded her in death in 1996. Following Red’s death, her son, Dean, provided loving care for his mother until she became a resident of Manor Care in June of 2001.
Mary and her husband, Leonard founded and operated Stewart’s Pharmacy on State St. and later, at 18th & Grant St. in Bettendorf for many years. In addition, they owned & operated Stewart’s Pharmacy in the Village Shopping Center and the Medical Park Pharmacy, both in Davenport. They closed the stores upon their retirement in 1986. In earlier years, Mary graduated from beauty school in Des Moines, Iowa in 1938 and opened a beauty shop in the Maytag Hotel in Newton, Iowa. She later operated a beauty shop in Davenport as well.
She was an accomplished seamstress and also enjoyed crocheting.
Those left to honor her memory include her daughter, Frances Thompson of Santa Maria, California; her son and daughter-in-law, Dean M. & Catherine Wood of Bettendorf; her grandchildren, Karen Wiel of Berkley, California, Lynn “Butch” Wood of Tacoma, Washington, Julie Wood of Hillsboro, Oregon, Dawn Porter of Hampton, Illinois and Robin Buskirk of Eldridge, Iowa; thirteen great-grandchildren and seven great-great grandchildren.
In addition to her husbands, she was preceded in death by her sisters, Frances, Kathryn & Cecelia; and her brothers, Rudolph, Nicholas & Thomas.
