Mattie F. Shaffer, 77, of Davenport, passed away peacefully on Saturday, March 21, 2009 at Davenport Lutheran Home.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m., Wednesday, March 25, 2009, at McGinnis-Chambers Funeral Home, Bettendorf. Visitation will be held from 4 until 7 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Dixon Cemetery, Dixon, Iowa. Memorials may be made to the family.
Mattie was born October 1, 1931 in Star City, Arkansas, the daughter of James Dallas & Lily Rachel (Davis) Jones. On April 9, 1962 she was united in marriage to Clifford C. Shaffer in Monmouth, Illinois. He preceded her in death on August 9, 1990.
Mattie had been employed as a grocery checker in Arkansas in earlier years. After moving to Davenport from Oklahoma in 1963, she was employed part-time as a waitress in Walcott, Iowa. She was a member of Bethel Assembly of God Church in Rock Island, Illinois. She enjoyed fishing, crocheting, playing cards and she was an avid Chicago Bears fan. Most of all, she enjoyed the company of her family and will be dearly missed.
Those left to honor her memory include her daughters, Karla (Brian) Geerts, of Bettendorf, Kate Goode (Scott Hutchison), of Davenport, and Mary (Jay) Belk of Moline, Illinois; her step-daughter, Kim Truitt; her grandchildren, Josh Geerts, Danny Goode, Annie Geerts, Joey Geerts, Andrew Belk, Breanna Goode and Destinee Belk; and her sister, Nina Snyder of Pine Bluff, Arkansas.
In addition to her husband, Cliff, she was preceded in death by her parents; her sisters, Verdie Gorman and Ann Rawson; her brothers, Neal, John, Howell and James, Jr.; and her daughter, Rachel Lily.
