Max E. Wilson, 100, of Bettendorf passed away on Monday, April 24, 2023 at Genesis Medical Center – East Campus, Davenport.
A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, April 28th at McGinnis-Chambers Funeral Home, Bettendorf. Visitation will be held from 10:00 a.m. until the time of service. Inurnment will be at the Rock Island National Cemetery where military honors will be conducted. Memorials may be directed to Honor Flight of the Quad Cities.
Max was born February 4, 1923 in Maquoketa, Iowa the son of Frank and Anna (Schumann) Wilson. He grew up northwest of Fulton on the family farm and attended New Castle Country School. Following high school, Max proudly served as a bombardier in the U.S. Army Air Corps. While stationed in Foggia, Italy, he flew 43 missions in a B-17 over five different countries including, Italy, France, Austria, the Balkans, and Germany. He was honorably discharged in 1945. On August 28, 1957, he was united in marriage to Vernelle Christopher. Max worked as a self-employed salesman of restaurant equipment. He enjoyed camping and fishing with his wife. Among his most memorable moments was being able to attend the 56th Honor Flight of the Quad Cities on April 4th.
Those left to honor his memory are his nieces, Paula (Tom) Marcus of Andrews, Iowa, Carolyn (Jack) Remke of Vero Beach, Florida; a nephew, Dick Wilson of Arizona; a niece-in-law, Pati Wilson of Maquoketa, Iowa; special friend, Katy Sones of Davenport; and numerous great-nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Vernelle; brother, Harlen Wilson; and nephew, Chuck Wilson.
