Melvin Eberlein

Melvin D. Eberlein, 80, formerly of Bettendorf, Iowa, died at Rosewood Care Center in Moline, Illinois on Tuesday, September 25, 2018.

Memorial services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday at Trinity Lutheran Church in Pleasant Valley, Iowa.  Visitation will be from 10:00 a.m. until the time of service at the church.  McGinnis-Chambers Funeral Home in Bettendorf, Iowa is assisting the family with arrangements.

Melvin was born on June 23, 1938 on the family farm near Volga, South Dakota, the seventh of eight children born to Frank and Gladys (Messerschmidt) Eberlein.  He graduated from Volga High School in 1956.  In 1960 he graduated from South Dakota State College with a Bachelors degree and in 1961 with a Masters degree.  Melvin taught high school social studies in George, Lytton, and Laurens, Iowa.  He served as high school principal in Lytton and Laurens, Iowa, and as vice principal at Pleasant Valley, Iowa.  In 1961, he married Rudella Weigel in Flandreau, South Dakota.  They had two children, Thomas and Kristine.

He is survived by his wife, Rudella Eberlein of Bettendorf; daughter, Kristine (Jeff) Rupp of Andalusia, Illinois; son, Thomas Eberlein of Bettendorf; brother, Delvin (Athene) Eberlein of Eau Claire, Wisconsin; sister-in-law, Pearl Eberlein of Oregon; and brother-in-law, Curtis Weigel of South Dakota.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by siblings, Alvin, Fern, Calvin, Lorraine, Lavada, and Joyce; son-in-law, Tim Paisley; nephews, Russell and Kevin; niece, Kathy; and grand-nephew, Nathan.

Memorials may be directed to the family, Scott County Humane Society, King’s Harvest Pet Rescue, or Amitie (WELCA).
