Mildred Jewel Meador, 89, a resident of Buffalo, Iowa died on Saturday, January 7, 2012 at the Clarissa Cook Hospice House in Bettendorf after an extended illness.
Her funeral service will be held at 10:00 A.M. Wednesday, January 11, 2012 at the McGinnis-Chambers Funeral Chapel in Bettendorf. She will be laid to rest at Rose Hill Cemetery in Buffalo. Visitation will be from 4:00 P.M. to 7:00 P.M. Tuesday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the Shriner’s Hospitals for Children or to the Clarissa Cook Hospice House.
She was born November 5, 1922 in Peru, Iowa, the daughter of Joseph E. & Mable O. (Durham) Ackelson. On September 30, 1939, she was united in marriage to James Meador in Buffalo. He preceded her in death on October 28, 1991.
Mildred was a Licensed Practical Nurse and had worked at Pine Knoll Mental Health Center, the former St. Luke’s Hospital in the Surgical Unit and also did private duty nursing for Dr. John Collins. In addition, she worked as a Chaplain’s Aide at Oak Hill Hospital in Spring Hill, Florida for five years.
Her memberships included the Order of the Eastern Star #178 of Davenport, the VFW Auxillary #6078 of Buffalo and the former Friends Church of Buffalo.
Those left to honor her memory include her son, Olin L. (Cheryl) Meador II of Buffalo; nine grandchildren; several great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her infant daughter, Ramona Sue Meador; her sons, Perry and Jerry; her foster-son, Frank Hurt; her sisters, Leona Anderson and Nina Johnson; and her brother, Bill Ackelson.
The family would like to extend their heartfelt thanks to the staff of the Senior Housing in Buffalo and the staff of the Clarissa Cook Hospice House for their loving and compassionate care shown to Mildred during her illness.
