Modesta Hayes

Modesta Arguello Hayes, 94, of Bettendorf, passed away on Wednesday, January 23, 2013 at Clarissa C. Cook Hospice House in Bettendorf, surrounded by her loving family.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:30 a.m. on Monday, January 28, 2013 at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church in Bettendorf. Burial will be at the Rock Island National Cemetery. Visitation will be from 2:00 p.m. – 5:00 p.m. on Sunday, January 27 th at McGinnis-Chambers Funeral Home in Bettendorf. A rosary will be recited at 1:45 p.m. on Sunday. Memorials may be made to Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church or Clarissa C. Cook Hospice House.
Born on February 24, 1918 in Douglas, AZ, Modesta was the daughter of Seferino and Tadea (Gomez) Arguello. On May 30, 1957 in Bettendorf, she married Pervis L. Hayes. He preceded her in death on April 17, 1981.
Modesta worked as a sewing machine operator for Davonshire, Inc. in Davenport for 20 years. She was a member of Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church and the Bettendorf VFW Auxiliary Post #9128 where she served as past president. Modesta was also a member of the Plus 60 Club. She enjoyed playing cards, going to the casino, watching television, especially Walker Texas Ranger and the Gaither Gospel Hour. Modesta loved spending time with her family especially for family gatherings. She will be remembered for her loving and caring manner and a person with a good sense of humor. Modesta was vibrant, spunky and stood up for what she believed in.
Those left to honor her memory include her sisters, Victoria Terronez of East Moline, Savina Negrete of La Puente, CA, Josephine Mendoza of Rock Island and Tillie Miller of Bettendorf. Also surviving are many nieces, nephews and God children.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; three sisters, Mary Dahms, Stephina Gutierrez and Mary Ellen Simms; and four brothers, Jesse, David, Frank and Michael Arguello.
Modesta’s family would like to thank Riverview Manor Nursing Home and Clarissa C. Cook Hospice House for their devoted and loving care during her last days.
