Mortier Kenneth “Mort” Beckmann, 86, a resident of Webster, WI formerly of Bettendorf, died Thursday, July 31, 2014 at Regions Hospital in St. Paul, MN with his family by his side.
A graveside service will be held at 12 Noon on Wednesday, August 6, 2014 at Rock Island National Cemetery. Visitation will be from 10:30 a.m. – 11:30 a.m. on Wednesday at McGinnis-Chambers Funeral Home in Bettendorf. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Humane Society of Scott Co. or the Quad City Animal Welfare Center.
Born on October 25, 1927 in Bettendorf, Mort was the son of Herman and Nettie (Pohlman) Beckmann. On August 5, 1950, he married Lois Wingler. After thirty plus years of marriage, they went their separate ways. She preceded him in death. Later, he shared twenty-five years of companionship with Anita Beckenbaugh. She preceded him in death.
Mort served his country in the Army Air Corps during the end of World War II. He worked for Iowa-Illinois Gas and Electric Company for 34 years.
Mort spent time boating, fishing, and camping. He enjoyed antiquing, especially for victrolas, treasure hunting, playing euchre and cribbage and gambling at the Hole in the Wall Casino. Mort played the drums in the “Older than Dirt Band.” He was a stock day-trader, an oil painter and owned a stock car. Mort was an avid Minnesota Vikings fan and was always “fiddle farting” around.
Those left to honor his memory include his daughter, Carolyn Peterson of Bettendorf; sons, Kenneth Beckmann of Bettendorf and Mark Beckmann of Anchorage, AK; five grandchildren, Rob, Nikki, Matt, Katie and Evan; and many great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by parents; granddaughter, Kelly McQuate; sister, Shirley Mekshes Willey and a sister, Janette, in infancy.
