He was united in marriage to Edith Mae Dodge on October 24, 1948 in Ogden, Iowa. She preceded him in death on September 14, 2007.

After graduating from high school in Corydon, Iowa, he served in the United States Navy on the USS Cape Johnson during World War II. He taught in public schools in Iowa for thirty-nine years, retiring from the Bettendorf Community School District in 1992.

In any organization of which he was a member, he was a volunteer. He was acknowledged as Volunteer of the Year at Quad-City Arts, Rock Island, Illinois. In his later years, he served as chairman of the Advisory Council at the Center for Active Seniors in Davenport and proudly served on its Board of Directors.
