Olive Smallwood

Funeral services for Olive Irene Smallwood, 95, of Bettendorf will be 1:00 pm on Friday, at McGinnis-Chambers Funeral Home, Bettendorf. Burial will follow at Davenport Memorial Park Cemetery, Davenport. Family will greet friends on Friday from noon until service time at the funeral home.

Olive passed away on Saturday, February 18, 2023, at the Iowa Masonic, Bettendorf. The family sincerely thanks them and home caregiver, Glorine, for exceptional care.

Olive was born on September 18, 1927 in Troy, Indiana, the daughter of Walter and Myrtle (Harris) Scott. She married Jack Edward Smallwood in Evansville, Indiana on June 28, 1953. He preceded her in death in 1982. She attended Augustana, graduated from Lockyear College, and retired as a secretary from the Rock Island Arsenal.

Olive was a member of The Outing Club and served as elder at Davenport FCC. In 1936, she begged her mother to enter and subsequently won the boys-only Perry County, Indiana Marble Championship.  Olive was also a member of the Friendship Force, Scottish American Society, and was an avid bridge player. Olive traveled extensively with friends worldwide including Australia, Russia, Europe and hosted a Japanese college student. Olive was instrumental in helping her husband establish an Industrial Ultrasonic cleaning business, SwenSonic, in 1981. She named the company which still exists today under a different name.

Survivors include her daughter, Karen (Kris) Jensen of Lawrenceville, Georgia, son, Robert Smallwood of Mexico, seven grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, and a sister, Mary (Don Sokeland) Couts of Indiana.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, son, William Smallwood, Step-son, David Smallwood, siblings, Beecher Scott, Fern Giffin, Hazel Colsch, Woodfin Scott, Violet Scott, Philbert Scott, Forrest Scott, Ira Ashley Scott and Oakley Scott.
