Opal Darline Shumate, 86, a resident of Bettendorf, passed away, Thursday, October 30, 2014 at the Kahl Home in Davenport.
Funeral services celebrating her life will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, November 4, 2014 at McGinnis-Chambers Funeral Home in Bettendorf. Burial will be at Pine Hill Cemetery. Visitation will be one hour prior to services on Tuesday. Memorials may be made to the Quad City Animal Welfare Center.
Born on August 27, 1928 in Kahoka, MO, Darline was the daughter of Everette Avo and Lillian Pearl (Parker) Boyer. In 1944 she married Joe “Stoney” Hendry. He preceded her in death. On December 15, 1973 in Moline, she married William F. Shumate. He preceded her in death.
Darline worked at Dorthea’s and later, Edna’s Café in Riverdale, the Dolly Madison Bakery and as a custodian for Bettendorf High School. She enjoyed baking, crocheting, camping, going to garage-sales and fish fry’s. Darline loved animals, especially her dogs, “The Boys III.”
Those left to honor her memory include her daughter, Patricia Hill of Bettendorf; step-children, Monty, Steve, Rory and Robin Shumate, all of the Quad Cities Area; 14 grandchildren and numerous great grandchildren and great-great grandchildren; and a sister, Evelyn of Des Moines, IA.
She was preceded in death by her parents; both husbands; and three daughters, Doris “Bunkie,” Gloria and Bev.
