Orie McFarland, 87, a resident of Bettendorf, Iowa, passed away at his home on Friday, June 24, 2005. Funeral services will be held at 1:00 P.M., Monday, June 27, 2005 at Travis-Noe Funeral Home in Kirksville, Missouri. Visitation will be from 2:00 P.M. to 5:00 P.M. Sunday evening at McGinnis-Chambers Funeral Home in Bettendorf and one hour before the services on Monday. Burial will be in Highland Park Cemetery, Kirksville. Memorials may be made to the family which will then be sent to the Bob Gass Orphanage in Romania.
Orie was born October 19, 1917 in rural Adair County, Missouri. He was the oldest child of John & Ina (Walters) McFarland. He received his education in Green City and Kirksville.
Orie was united in marriage to Beryl Watts on June 20, 1936. To this union five children were born. After her death, he was united in marriage to Sally Bettis on September 6, 1975.
Orie owned a trucking business and also managed a concrete plant in Kirksville before becoming a finishing carpenter. He was especially skilled at repairing and refinishing antique furniture. He gave his life to Christ as a young man. He was a member of the Assembly of God churches, most recently attending Bethel Assembly of God Church in Rock Island, Illinois.
Those left to honor his memory include his beloved wife, Sally; his daughter, Patty Hamilton of Kirksville; his son Marvin “Corky” McFarland of Ottumwa, Iowa; his daughter-in-law, Helena McFarland of Ottumwa; his son-in-law, Dennis Fox of Kirksville; his step-daughters, Sondra Remer, and her husband, Stan, of Stafford, Virginia, Ilene Stroud and her husband, Don, of Long Grove, Iowa; and Nancy Bettis, of Bettendorf; 24 grandchildren, 30 great-grandchildren; 3 great-great grandchildren; and his sister and brother-in-law Susie & Gene Corbett of Kirksville
In addition to his first wife, Beryl, he was preceded in death by his parents; his son Orie Junior; his daughters, Virginia Fox and Donna Thompson; his sons-in-law, Bill Hamilton and Bob Thompson; his sisters, Lola Schillie and Ola Rusk; and his brothers, Perry, Lyle, Roscoe, Waldo, and Johnnie.
