Paul Joseph Sweeney, 96, a resident of Bettendorf, died Thursday, November 17, 2016 at Genesis Medical Center, West Central Park.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:30 a.m. on Tuesday, November 22, 2016 at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church in Bettendorf. Burial will be at Mt. Calvary Cemetery in Davenport. Visitation will be from 4:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m. on Monday, November 21st at McGinnis-Chambers Funeral Home in Bettendorf. Memorials may be made to Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church.
Born on July 14, 1920 in Welton, Iowa, Paul was the son of John and Marie (McClimon) Sweeney. Paul served his country during World War II in the United States Army Air Corp from 1944-1945 as a pilot flying the B-25 Bomber. Following his time in the Army, Paul graduated from Loras College in Dubuque. On June 18, 1955 at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church, he married Edna Tharp.
Paul worked as a planner at Alcoa for 37 years, retiring in 1987. He enjoyed golfing, bowling and watching sports.
Those left to honor his memory include his wife, Edna; daughter, Maureen (Martin) Quick of Davenport; sons, Thomas (Carolyn) Sweeney of Rockville, Virginia, David (Cynthia) Sweeney of Durant; Kevin (Michelle) Sweeney of Long Beach, California and Terry (Stephanie) Sweeney of Davenport; grandchildren, Michael, Patrick, Tara, Reilly, Logan, Benjamin, Jayde and Timothy; great-grandchildren, Aran and Eli; and a brother, Earl Sweeney of San Jacinto, California.
He was preceded in death by his parents, sisters, Madeline and Ruth.
