Philip B. Doherty, 90, of Riverdale, died Tuesday, March 20, 2012 at Clarissa C. Cook Hospice House in Bettendorf.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held 10:00 a.m. Monday, March 26, 2012 at St. John Vianney Catholic Church in Bettendorf. Burial will be at Rock Island National Cemetery. Visitation will be held on Sunday, March 25, 2012 from 2:00 – 5:00 p.m. at McGinnis-Chambers Funeral Home in Bettendorf. Memorials may be made to Habitat for Humanity or St. Jude Children’s Hospital.
Born on September 6, 1921 in Sioux City, Iowa, Phil was the son of Bernard Michael and Mary Barron Doherty. On September 2, 1947 in Sterling, IL, he married Maxine Miller.
Phil worked for the Department of Agriculture prior to entering the United States Army in April 1944. He was in the Pacific Theater during WWII and was released from active duty in November 1946, and was in the Army Reserves until 1953. Phil was a recipient of the Purple Heart. Following the Army, Phil was employed as an Engineer for Bendix and then retired in 1975 from the Rock Island Arsenal after many years of service. After retirement, he served on the City Council and the Board of Adjustment for the city of Riverdale. Phil enjoyed woodworking, gardening, flowers and traveling. He was a member of St. John Vianney Catholic Church in Bettendorf.
Survivors include his wife Maxine of Riverdale; daughter, Cathy Doherty of Ann Arbor, MI; sons, Michael (Diane) Doherty of Denver, CO and Kevin (Shari) Doherty of Aurora, CO; six grandchildren and six great-grandchildren; and one sister, Celeste Doherty of Cortland, NY.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one daughter, Peggy; one grandson, James; and one brother, Richard.
