Memorials may be directed to River City Church, Moline or to Hospice Compassus.
Phyllis was born February 24, 1939 in West Liberty, Iowa, the daughter of John and Marguerite (Sullivan) Kaalberg. On September 13, 1959, she was united in marriage to Eugene R. Combs at West Liberty Catholic Church. Phyllis was a devoted wife, mom, grandma, and great-grandma. She loved her family unconditionally. She lived her life for Jesus and was a shining example of His love and mercy.
Phyllis was very active in her church and the community. She was the nursery director for over 20 years at MGT New Hope (now River City) and was a volunteer for Hospice Compassus. At the age of 80, she learned how to knit and donated her time making prayer shawls for hospice patients. She enjoyed word searches, cheering on the Chicago Cubs, Chicago Bears, and Iowa Hawkeyes, and listening to the Gaithers. For years she was active in Jazzercise and Curves. She also enjoyed working alongside her dear friend, Connie Crouch, at Flaherty’s Irish Candy Co., Bettendorf. Phyllis will be fondly remembered for giving the tightest and biggest hugs!
Those left to honor her memory are her children, Cindy (Dan) Mundt of Bettendorf, Don (Mary) Combs of Park View, and John (Amanda) Combs of Blue Grass; seven grandchildren, Mary Lynne (Frank) Darnell, Eugene Combs II, Nicole (Tom) Warner, Joshua (Megan) Mundt, Rebecca (Erick) Recinos, Alyssa (Travis) White, and Ethan Combs; eight great-grandchildren; siblings, Bob (Janet) Kaalberg, Jerry (Donna) Kaalberg, Don (Barbara) Kaalberg, Carolyn Thompson, Dick (Barbara) Kaalberg, Janice (Ken) Woode, Linda (Jeff) Loring; and numerous nieces, nephews, and friends.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Eugene; and her sister, Pat Sovers.
The family would like to thank the staff at Hospice Compassus for their exceptional care and compassion.
