Ralph E. Benson, 89, a resident of Bettendorf, Iowa died on Friday, June 30, 2006 at Genesis Medical Center, West Campus in Davenport, Iowa.
His funeral service will be held at 10:30 A.M. Thursday, July 6, 2006 at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church, Bettendorf where he was a member. Burial will be in the Rock Island National Cemetery where military honors will be conducted. Visitation will be from 5:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M. Wednesday at McGinnis-Chambers Funeral Home, Bettendorf where a prayer service will be held at 5:00 P.M. Memorials may be made to Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church.
He was born June 22, 1917 in Rock Island, Illinois, the son of Arthur & Alice (Ward) Benson. On April 7, 1951, he was united in marriage to Cynthia F. Tadlock in Rock Island. She preceded him in death on June 27, 1990.
Ralph was employed as a Supply Specialist at the Rock Island Arsenal, retiring in 1980 after 42 years of faithful service.
During World War II, he served in the U.S. Army and was honorably discharged following the war.
He was an avid bowler and enjoyed being a “handyman” around the house – fixing anything that needed fixing.
Those left to honor his memory include his daughters, Kathy (Ronald) Pietz of Grayson, Georgia, Janet (James) Shannon of Davenport, Judy (Daniel) Bennett of LeClaire, Iowa and Theresa (David) Behr of Independence, Kentucky; his son, Gary (Beverly) Benson of Bettendorf; his grandchildren, Jennifer, Jodi, Keith, Kara, Ryan, Jeremy, Kyle & Zachary; his great-grandchildren, Kaitlyn, Madisyn & Nicholas; and his brothers, Gerald (Betty) Benson of Haymarket, Virginia and Paul (Wanda) Benson of Ft. Pierce, Florida.
In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his brothers, Mike Benson and Don Benson.
