Richard “Howard” Lively, 91, of Bettendorf, Iowa, died Saturday, January 12, 2008 at the Clarissa C. Cook Hospice House in Bettendorf.
Funeral services will be held at 10:00 A.M., Tuesday, January 15, 2008 at McGinnis-Chambers Funeral Home, Bettendorf. Visitation will be held from 4:00 P.M. to 7:00 P.M. Monday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Salem Lutheran Cemetery, Princeton, Iowa. Memorials may be made to the Clarissa C. Cook Hospice House or Trinity VNA Hospice.
Howard was born July 19, 1916 in Nashville, Missouri, the son of Richard & Arminda (Haskins) Lively. His family later moved to western Iowa traveling with a family of 10 in a Model T Ford. They moved to Princeton, Iowa when Howard was 9. He remained in the Princeton and LeClaire areas until he was 85.
Howard lived and worked on a farm as a child. As a young adult he trekked to Arizona and Colorado to work on different ranches as a cowboy. After moving back to Iowa some of his many other jobs included helping to build Lock & Dam 14, farming land that is now Alcoa, and working at Sivyer Steel. After retirement he then started his own mowing business which he ran until he was 85. Howard was always hard-working and persistent. He always had a “lively” spirit indeed!
Howard met Mildred Birney at a chicken supper at a church in Argo, Iowa and they married two years later on October 21, 1939. Howard and Millie were married just shy of 60 years and they raised four fine children, Richard (Janet) Lively, of Westerville, Ohio, Darryl Lively, of Bettendorf, Linda Allen, of Bettendorf, and Debbie (Rick) Mulvania, of Bettendorf. Our beloved mom and grandma left us 9 ½ years ago on August 9, 1998 and we still miss her.
Howard later married Arline Freeman when they were a young pair of octogenarians. They were married a little over 8 years when Howard passed.
Howard is also survived by seven grandchildren and spouses, Marc (Becky) Lively, Scott (Susan) Lively, Angelia (Steve) Gustafson, Travis Corson, Barry Mulvania, Matt Mulvania and Megan Mulvania. He really enjoyed his great-grandchildren who were all together for his 90th birthday. They are Thomas, Elizabeth and John Lively, Sarah Lively, and Emma and Jack Gustafson. He is also survived by step-daughters, Barb (Dwain) Ruser and Nadine Jones.
Howard also joins in Heaven his parents, his siblings and his sweet little great-grandchildren, William, Kathleen and Sam.
Howard’s family would like to thank Arline for sharing the last years of his life.
