Richard Davis

Richard Leland Davis, 89, of Davenport passed away Saturday, October 10, 2015 at the Kahl Home in Davenport.  Richard suffered a broken hip that required two surgeries in the past three weeks.

Services will be held at a later date. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society. McGinnis-Chambers Funeral Home in Bettendorf is assisting the family with arrangements.

Richard was born August 27, 1926 to John and Dessie Davis in Kirksville, Missouri.  He was one of seven children, all others now deceased.  Richard was raised in the Kirksville area and attended school there.  He moved to Iowa in the 1940s and began his long career in the building trades.

Richard and LaVon Jones Davis, formerly of New London, were married in Kirksville, Missouri.  Their union was blessed with two children, Francine Lynn (Danny) Long of Bettendorf and the late Gary Richard Davis, who lived in New London Iowa.   Richard and LaVon lived in New London for several years, prior to moving to the Bettendorf/Davenport area in the early 60s.

He worked out of Carpenter’s Union Four for over 65 years.  He retired from the Priester Construction Co. in 1991.  Anyone who knew Richard knew that whatever carpentry project he undertook it would be done perfectly.   He indeed was a master craftsman.

Richard was a loyal Cardinal’s fan and spent many hours listening to his favorite team.  He was fortunate to be able to attend a few of the games. He enjoyed those games very much. He spent much of his life working, so the games were a rare time for him to relax and enjoy this sport of baseball that he had become to like so much.  It gave him a reason to quit working, sit down and listen to the game.

Richard was always proud that his life’s work enabled him to provide well for his family.  Through the years, many marveled at the dedication and love he bestowed upon his wife. He will be missed.

Richard was a loving husband, grandparent and great-grandparent and will be missed by his surviving family.   Survivors include his wife, LaVon and daughter and her husband, Francine and Danny Long;  grandchildren,  Andrea (Mike) Martin and Mike Stotlar, both of Davenport and Ann Davis, Mt. Pleasant, Iowa and greatgrandchildren, Jessica Luckenbihl Moline, Il.,  Corbin and  Auggie  Stotlar of Davenport, several nieces, nephews and other friends and relatives.

He was preceded in death by son, Gary Richard Davis in 2012; a grandson, John Richard Davis; his parents, brothers, Leo and Leonard and sisters, Goldie, Ethel, Delores and Juanita.
