Richard V. “Dick” Unwin, 95, of LeClaire, died Monday, March 4, 2013 at the Iowa Masonic Health Facility in Bettendorf.
Funeral services celebrating his life will be held at 2:30 p.m. on Friday, March 8, 2013 at McGinnis-Chambers Funeral Home in Bettendorf. Burial will be at Glendale Cemetery in LeClaire. Visitation will be from 1:00 p.m. until the time of services on Friday. Memorials may be made to the Iowa Masonic Health Facility Activity Fund or to the LeClaire Civic Club.
Dick was born on September 24, 1917 in Nevada, Iowa, the son of William and Edna (Pierce) Unwin. On May 24, 1941 in Kahoka, MO, he married Verna Rylander. She preceded him in death on April 17, 2009.
Dick worked in the maintenance department for Alcoa for 33 years. He proudly served his country in the United States Army during World War II. Dick was a member of the Buffalo Bill American Legion Post 347 in LeClaire, Buffalo Bill Museum and the LeClaire Civic Club. He enjoyed fishing, woodworking, traveling and reading Mickey Spillane novels.
Those left to honor his memory include his daughters, Sue (Kenneth) Asay of Bettendorf, Marcia (Chelle) Unwin of Bettendorf and Betty (Daniel) Brieser of LeClaire; his sons, Jerry (Judy) Unwin and Tom Unwin, both of LeClaire; 10 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren; and one sister, Mildred Miller of Bettendorf.
Dick was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Verna; one sister, Bernice and one grandson, Scott.
Dick’s family would like to extend their most sincere appreciation to the staff at the Iowa Masonic Health Facility for their kind, loving and dedicated care of Dick during the final years of his life.
