Richard P. Miller, 80, a resident of rural LeClaire, Iowa died Monday, May 30, 2005 at Trinity at Terrace Park Hospital in Bettendorf, Iowa.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 A.M. Friday, June 3, 2005 at Zion Lutheran Church, Princeton, Iowa where he was a 33-year member. Burial will be in the Rock Island National Cemetery where military honors will be conducted. Visitation will be from 4:00 P.M. to 7:00 P.M. Thursday at the McGinnis-Chambers Funeral Home, Bettendorf. Memorials may be made to the church.
He was born April 15, 1925 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, the son of Joseph Paul & Margaret (Leginy) Miller. Richard left high school at age 17 and joined the U.S. Navy. He served in the south Pacific during World War II aboard Sub-Chaser #702 and the U.S.S. Alabama. On April 3, 1946, he was honorably discharged.
On June 15, 1946, he was united in marriage to Maxine E. Naumann in Pittsburgh.
Richard retired in 1987 as a sales engineer with the General Electric Corporation after a 42-year career.
In addition to the church, he was a member of the Verona Masonic Lodge of Verona, Pennsylvania, the Buffalo Bill American Legion Post 347 of LeClaire, the National Rifle Association, the USS Alabama’s Crewman’s Association and a 68-year member of the Hayes Lane Camp on Buffalo Flat mountain in Pennsylvania.
Among the things he enjoyed were gardening, canning and the Iowa Hawkeyes. Throughout his life he remained a true patriot and was extremely proud of his service during World War II. His beloved family, especially his grandchildren & great-grandchildren were the joy of his life.
Those left to honor his memory include his wife, Maxine; his daughter, Colleen McCaw of New Windsor, Illinois; his son & daughter-in-law, Richard & Deana Miller of Colona, Illinois; his grandchildren, Tim Becker, Chris (Laurie) Becker, Tom Becker, Jamie (Vallarie) Becker, Becky (Brad) Gruhl, Lara (Marvin) Miller, Richard (Stephanie) Miller III, Chris (Jami) Gordon and Kim (Paul) Proehl; his great-grandchildren, Jeremiah, T.J., Matthew, Samantha, Alex, Grace, Sarah, Ian, Lexi, Mackenzie, Makayla and a new great-grandson expected in September; and his brother & sister-in-law, Raymond J. & Betty Miller of Edgewood, Maryland.
