Richard W. Saunders, 76, a resident of Davenport, Iowa died Wednesday, March 11, 2004 at Genesis Medical Center, East Campus.
Funeral services will be held at 10:00 A.M. Monday, March 15, 2004 at the McGinnis-Chambers Funeral Chapel, Bettendorf. Burial will be in the Rock Island National Cemetery where military honors will be conducted. Visitation will be from 2:00 P.M. to 4:00 P.M. and 6:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M. Sunday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the Berean Baptist Church of Davenport, the American Legion Post 26 or Davenport Chapter #2 of the Disabled American Veterans.
He was born October 28, 1927 in Ottumwa, Iowa, the son of Carl Wick & Creta Fay (Wheeler) Saunders.. He was united in marriage to Rosemary Oatman in 1955. She preceded him in death in 1993. He was united in marriage to Imogene Brown in Davenport on May 2, 1998.
Richard was employed in sales for Dahl Ford in Davenport until his retirement several years ago. In earlier years, he was employed with the National Life Insurance Company, the U.S. Hospital Supply Company, the Eureka Company, the Dictaphone Corporation of Bettendorf and later, with the A. B. Dick Company where he sold & serviced office machines. In addition, he also worked as a portrait photographer in Tucson, Arizona for several years.
During the Korean Conflict he served in the U.S. Army with the 47th Armd. Med. Batallion and he was honorably discharged in 1954.
Richard was a tireless volunteer and always willing to lend a hand where help was needed. He was a member & past-commander of the Scott County Veteran’s Association, a member, past-commander and past-chaplain of the American Legion Post 26 and a member & current chaplain of Davenport Chapter #2 of the Disabled American Veterans. In addition, he was a member of the Bi-County Memorial Day Association, a longtime member of the Mayor’s Council-Affirmative Action Committee and a member of Berean Baptist Church of Davenport.
Those left to honor his memory include his wife, Imogene; his step-daughter, Becky Kane & her husband, Steve of Bettendorf; his step-son, Richard Lee Brown & his wife, Linda of Alachua, Florida; his step-grandchildren, Steven & Sara Kane, Cody & Cory Brown, Breanna Lynn Kane, Jocelyn Kiddy and Amanda Blasie; his step-great-grandchildren, Dakota Kane Davis & Ethan Kane; his sister & brother-in-law, Morris & Norline Saunders of Portland, Oregon; his niece, Mandy Saunders; his nephew, Todd Saunders & his wife, Becky; and his sister-in-law & brother-in-law, Dorothy & Nelson Humphreys of Greeneville, Tennessee.
