Robert L. Connelly, 90, a resident of Davenport, Iowa died Thursday, October 18, 2012 at Ridgecrest Health Center, Davenport.
At his request, he will be cremated with no public service. McGinnis-Chambers Funeral Home, Bettendorf, Iowa is assisting the family with arrangements. Memorials may be made to VFW Post 9128, Bettendorf.
Robert was born April 22, 1922 in Moline, Illinois the son of Erentx and Cecilia (Mader) Connelly.
Robert served in the United States Nave as a Boatswain’s Mate First Class and is a decorated World War II veteran, having survived the D-Day landing in France in 1944. After his service days he became a tanker man on the Mississippi River and later became an Assistant Lockmaster totaling forty-six years of service.
He was a lifetime member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Post 9128 in Bettendorf.
He was an avid walker for his health and wellness and thoroughly enjoyed meeting and making new friends along the way. Many days he would walk ten miles. He also thoroughly enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Those left to honor his memory include his daughter, Sharon (James) Mitchell, Madison, Wisconsin; his step-daughters, Janet (Robert) Cruchelow, Davenport, Joyce (Lynn) Keller, Davenport, Diane Rissler, Bettendorf, and Vicki (Gary) Newton, Davenport; his step-son, Lawrence (Theresa) Vogt, Davenport; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren too numerous to list.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Raymond Connelly and his sister, Della Mae Sten.
