Robert Rhinehart

April 30, 1944 — December 1, 2017

Robert D. Rhinehart, 73, of Eldridge, Iowa, passed away Friday, December 1, 2017 at the Clarissa C. Cook Hospice House in Bettendorf surrounded by his loving family.

Funeral Services will be held at 10:00 a.m., Friday, December 8, 2017 at the Eldridge United Methodist Church where he was a member. Visitation will be held from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Thursday at the church.   Graveside services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday at Union Cemetery in Hartwick, Iowa.  In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the Iowa Lions Foundation.  Chambers Funeral Home of Eldridge is assisting the family with arrangements.

Robert was born April 30, 1944 in Brooklyn, Iowa, the son of David & Gayle (Benton) Rhinehart and was raised in nearby Victor, Iowa.  Upon graduating high school, he attended and obtained his teaching degree from William Penn College in Oskaloosa, Iowa, where he had played baseball. Robert held the record for most runs and home runs at the college for many years.

Robert was united in marriage to Kathryn A. Miller on April 5, 1964 in Hartwick and they were blessed with 53 years of marriage.

Robert’s teaching career led him to LDF, Zearing, West Liberty, Elgin and Eldridge.  He taught high school mathematics and computers. He also coached many girls’ sports, primarily softball and track. He retired as the IT Coordinator with Tipton Community School District.

In 1977, Robert joined the Lions Club of Elgin, transferring to Eldridge in 1983 where he remained an integral member.  A three-time past president and treasurer for 13 years, he was named District Governor in 2016.  A tireless volunteer and enthusiastic member of Lions, he had chaired countless fundraisers and served on several committees.  Robert had received the Warren Coleman Honorary Award and the Melvin Jones Fellow Award in recent years.  His leadership and organizational skills within the club will be remembered.

His hobbies; particularly keen with baseball statistics, all Iowa Hawkeyes sports, the Chicago Cubs and travel.  Together with his wife they traveled to all fifty states and several countries.

Those left to honor his memory include his wife, Kathy; his son, Tim Rhinehart of Muscatine, Iowa; his daughters, Cindy (Mike) Terorde of Shepherdsville, Kentucky and Ann Rhinehart of Davenport, Iowa;  his grandsons, Matthew (Gina) Terorde, Christopher Terorde and Zachary Terorde; his great-grandson, Roland Terorde; and his siblings, Steve (Rose) Rhinehart of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Russell (Mary) Rhinehart of North Liberty, Iowa, Janet (Dan) McConnell of Cedar Falls, Iowa, Jack (Mary) Rhinehart of Victor, Craig (Elaine) Rhinehart of Brooklyn, Gary (Jennifer) Rhinehart of Victor, Judy (Gary) Martin of North Liberty, Joyce Moreland of Des Moines, Iowa, Jo Ann McGinley of Mitchellville, Iowa and Kathy Rhinehart of Waterloo, Iowa.

Robert was preceded in death by his parents.
