Robert B. Perkins, 85, a resident of Bettendorf, Iowa died Wednesday, November 19, 2008 at the Iowa Masonic Health Facility, Bettendorf.
A memorial visitation will be held from 2:00 P.M. to 5:00 P.M., Sunday, November 23, 2008 at McGinnis-Chambers Funeral Home, Bettendorf. Private family burial will be in Rock Island National Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Iowa Masonic Health Facility.
Robert was born March 8, 1923 in Lake City, Iowa, the son of Estil & Kathryn (Robbins) Perkins. He was united in marriage to Lavonne I. Meinert on November 20, 1946 in Davenport. She preceded him in death on November 11, 1981.
During World War II, he served as a Sergeant in the United States Marine Corps from 1941 to 1945. He participated in action in Guadalcanal, the Gilbert Islands and other areas of the South Pacific
Robert retired in 1988 as a construction mechanic for the former Montgomery Elevator & Escalator Company in Moline.
Robert donated land to the city of Bettendorf for development of Hollowview Park and a portion of the bike path in memory of his loving wife. He served as a Bettendorf 3rd Ward Alderman for four terms from 1977 to 1985. He loved spending time with his family & friends, sitting outside waiting for someone to stop by for coffee, a beer and conversation.
Those left to honor his memory include his children, Danny (Cindy) Perkins of Somonauk, Illinois, Cheryl (Dennis) Smith of Bettendorf, Bobbie (John) Walker, of Davenport, David Perkins of Los Angeles, California, Penny (Matt) Rueter of Davenport and Wayne (Denise ) Perkins, of Bettendorf; 15 grandchildren; 7 great-grandchildren; and his brothers, Richard Perkins, of Hemet, California and Kenneth (Natalie) Perkins, of Sunrise, Florida.
In addition to his wife, Lavonne, he was preceded in death by his parents; his sister, Jean Ann Bauer; and twin great-grandsons.
