Robert D. Luke, 85, of Bettendorf, died Friday, April 10, 2009 at Genesis Medical Center-West Campus, Davenport.
Funeral Services and Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:30 A.M., Tuesday, April 14, 2009 at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church, Bettendorf. Visitation will be from 4:00 P.M. to 7:00 P.M., Monday at McGinnis-Chambers Funeral Home, Bettendorf. Burial with military honors will be in Mt. Calvary Cemetery, Davenport. Memorials may be made to the church.
Bob was born January 15, 1924 in Marion, Ohio, the son of Russell & Florence (Gallagher) Luke. He received his degree in Aeronautical Engineering from the University of Notre Dame. Bob was united in marriage to Jean Languish at the University of Notre Dame cathedral in 1948. She preceded him in death on November 1, 1994. He later was united in marriage to Shirley Hohl in Bettendorf in 1998. She preceded him in death in June of 2008.
Bob had also been a graduate of the ROTC program at Notre Dame and he had served as a flight instructor with the United States Marine Corps during the Korean Conflict. During his military service, he was part of the security detail for Harry Truman’s inauguration in 1948.
Bob had a variety of interest and hobbies. He was an avid reader and enjoyed building model boats and ships. He played golf and had done marathon running in earlier years. He and his wife, Jean, had enjoyed dancing at the Col Ballroom and had done extensive traveling throughout the world. Additionally, he enjoyed Notre Dame sporting activities and working in his yard, paying careful attention to landscaping.
Those left to honor his memory include his sons and daughters-in-law, Scott & Celia Luke, of Bettendorf, Terrence Luke, of Hudson, Florida, Matt &Terri Luke, of Bettendorf, Jon Luke and his significant other, Dora Brandt, of Grand Blanc, Michigan and Tim Luke, of Bettendorf; nine grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
In addition to his wives, Jean & Shirley, Bob was preceded in death by his parents; his son, Roark; and his sisters, Mary Martha Luke and Margaret Ann Schuler.
